The New Student is from Aleppo

THE NEW STUDENT is from Aleppo
and when she tells me this,
I put my hand on my heart.
She nods.
Some things you don’t need language for.

I find
she knows her alphabet
and numbers already.
Colors, not so much.
So today I make sure
to bring along my Crayola 8-pack.


The new student is from Aleppo
and today I’ll teach her about colors.
It doesn’t seem enough,
but we have to begin somewhere.
