Fixing Something That’s Falling Apart can be Good Therapy

I TOOK A BIG, BIG SCISSOR
(found in the workshop)
to the tattered seat of a chair
that’s served us well
near 40 years,
the last ten of which
have called for chair pads
to mask the appearance.

All the years this chair and its 3 sisters have seen!
I gasped when I made the first cut.
But I can’t have guests falling through now, can I?

Cutting away

Cuttings pile up underneath.

(It was very therapeutic.)

I watched a video
and made a start
and went to Lowe’s
and got just one more tool
and came home
and got back into it.
With a hot cup of tea nearby
and a Christmas movie as background
from 6 to 8 each night
I’m making progress on something,
which is a wonderful feeling.

I promise to post a photo of the finished product.
