Seconds 25¢

THE BASKET under THE TABLE
at the farmers market
had a sign:
“Seconds, 25¢.”

Seconds,
not quite perfect.

“My wife told me not to bother bringing ’em,”
the farmer said.
“But I thought
so what they don’t look perfect?”

“I’ll take four,” I said.
Two would have been enough,
but I’m an unrepentant champion of the marginalized
and now I hope to do a recipe post later this week.

What do you love to rescue??

Right now I am rescuing a tree load of apples, picked by Paul and bagged in a gigantic brown paper garden refuse bag and in my laundry room. I made two apple crisps to serve 12 plus tonight and it felt so good to put them into the freezer, but I have a lot more peeling to do–the quantity in the bag hardly went down at all. I thank God for abundant harvests—really! 🙂
