Stopping to Play

It’s gotten so bad that
“I Brake for Photo Opps”
belongs on my car’s bumper
(also my bike’s),

points in my favor here –
last week
down in the Piedmont
I passed up a gem.

was parked in front of a ramshackle house
and I kept going.

I did not come to a screeching halt,
circle back
or pull up on the lawn.

Sorry, more important matters to tend to –

paper airplanes to make,
log houses to build,
books to read,
movies to watch,
cakes to bake
and feats of basketball prowess to praise.

* * *

that never happen to me at home.

A piece of tape got stuck to my sock
and I was called upon to draw a pirate flag.
High adventure for a hermit!

Best of all
somewhere along the line
the tape playing in my head
weeks now
went silent.
I got some breathing space.

Play is excellent therapy.
I fall out of the habit easily
and it takes some intentionality to get back in.
Need to on purpose stop braking for some things
and start breaking for playtime.

Drawing a pirate flag (left). Fortunately I had the 2 plastic ones to refer to.

  1. I’m a tire-screeching photo-op braker, too. But I’m not sure if I would have been brave enough to swing back to that car.

Anyway, I think you chose best this time. 🙂 I love Lincoln Logs!

Hello, my friend! It sounds like you are having a wonderful time down south. And just for the record, I think you should always wear a star on your forehead. It speaks volumes.

and pleased to hear that your brain is taking a little vacation from those “other things”
    very important.
