A few weeks ago I read a post about what it takes to write a book. The blogger named five things, the same five things needed to accomplish most anything:

  • passion – enough steam to see it through; it is not enough to run on someone ELSE’s passion
  • confidence – believing in what you are doing and that it’s worth it.
  • focus – a sense of direction; fine-tuning the goal so it’s not wishy-washy; you will need it to guide you when you go astray, so take the time to identify where you hope to land
  • plan – evidence of serious thought given to how to get from point A to point B; yes, you may get a redirect along the way, you may need to make adjustments, but are you stewarding what you DO know at this point by doing the work of thinking it through?
  • the writing – the real WORK of the thing; ‘dirt under your nails’, so to speak; LOTS of people talk about writing, gardening, cooking, building things, going back to school, BUT are they actually at the computer, in the dirt, in the kitchen, picking up the hammer, filling out the application? Ah, THERE’s the dividing line between someone who is serious and someone who is just dreaming.

It’s almost SPRING here. Planting time. Maybe time to pick ONE thing you’ve been dreaming about and move into the actual DOING of it?

Have you lingered too long in Dreamland?

In addition to my anti-hermit initiative, I have a few other resolutions/plans:

Finishing
I have three writing projects that I plan to move from the IDEA or PARTIALLY FINISHED stage to COMPLETED in 2010. A year’s work, accomplished not by binge writing but by steady small steps.

Continuing
I’ll continue the morning Listening Practice begun in 2009!
Also, will continue adding to my Gratitude Journal because I think that’s done me a lot of good.

Dropping . . . maybe
I’ve contemplated abandoning my Spanish language studies and not setting yet another goal related to that, b-u-t……..this afternoon I reconsidered. Still, ‘dropping’ can most definitely be a resolution category and there are a few things I think have run their season and it’s time to move on.

I like figuring out reasonable and measureable goals, but dislike sharing too many details. That is POSSIBLY attributable to a fear of public failure. Possibly. It’s MAYBE due to not wanting to be nagged. Maybe. Mostly, I think it’s because once I’ve talked extensively about something I want to do, all the steam seems to go out of the effort for me. ‘Tis true.

How about you? Do you like to share the details of your plans/resolutions? Or do you like to keep them to yourself?

It happens several times a week. I read someone’s story and wonder: How many times did they almost NOT write it because they were sure nobody would understand or care?

The question dogs the heels of just about every writer I know, but I’m here to tell you right now:

You just never know. WRITE it ANYWAY!

Dana Jennings

I read Dana Jennings’ blog post about how the spirit in recovery craves solitude THREE times last week, twice to myself and once to someone else.

An obscure and niche topic? Perhaps.

Did he wonder, as he was writing, whether anyone would understand or care? Very likely. But he wrote it anyway. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who got something out of it.

Yesterday I read a short piece by a young mother who just needed a little affirmation for something. That’s all. And she felt horrible for feeling that way.  Is there a mother who hasn’t felt that way? I’m sure she stopped partway through her writing, probably several times, and wondered if she should put her thoughts on paper for others to read or forget about it, but I’m glad she saw it through to the end.

Writing is an act of faith. (All art is.) Unsure of whether anyone will understand or care, you have faith that what you have to say is worth being said at least once, someplace. We don’t always know all the reasons. We may never know. Write it anyway.
