TAKING BACK ROADS
through Morgan County,
sounds of the Interstate fade
and
you can hear the colors on the trees.
On near-forgotten roads -
once trails
marked and made
by pioneers
with horse and wagon -
the long view comes easier.
In the presence of boundless sky,
impossibilities evaporate.
I say it every time,
“Need to come this way more often,”
but taking the exit
off the highway
always seems a big choice,
hurry seeming more important.
But it’s done me good this day,
taking back roads home.
